How do you explain to your insurance company this one?

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - What happened to a Chattanooga police officer's car was certainly under the radar. A city police spokeswoman said Sunday that Officer Clayton Holmes had been checking traffic speeds with radar and stopped to fill out a report when he felt his car shaking. He found a dog chewing on the tires. After the dog attacked two passing cars and a second police car, officers used pepper spray and a Taser on it, but the animal wasn't deterred.By the time McCamey Animal Center staffers captured that dog and two others, it had chewed two tires and the entire front bumper off Holmes' patrol car.

Officer Rebecca Royval said the dogs got out of a fence at a nearby welding shop. The owner was cited and the dogs were removed.

Downtown Cincinnati breaking land for a new dog park

By Carrie Whitaker • cwhitaker@enquirer.com • March 5, 2010
With the boost of a $50,000 grant from Procter & Gamble Pet Care division, the Downtown Residents' Council can break ground in the coming months on a half-acre fenced-in dog area on Eggleston Avenue, a piece of greenspace that stretches below Gilbert Avenue and Interstate 71.

"Downtown dog owners have wanted a place to take their dogs for a long time," said residents' council board member Chris Wiedeman, who lives on Fourth Street with his wife and their 7-year-old wired terrier, Metro. "When Fountain Square reopened, but didn't allow dogs, we began talking to the city about finding a spot."
The council, founded in 1985 to promote the city's central business district, has been planning the off-the-leash dog area for the last year and a half, Wiedeman said. Working with a $75,000 budget, the grant from P&G gets the council near its goal, Wiedeman said.
"P&G Pet Care exists to enhance the health and well being of dogs and cats," said P&G external relations coordinator Julie Franklin. "Anything we can do to strengthen the relationship between the pet owner and his or her pet we are happy to support."
Most of the land is owned by the Ohio Department of Transportation, with a small slice owned by the city, said Michael Moore, City of Cincinnati's interim director of transportation and engineering, He has helped the council get a permit through ODOT for the project.
"It's always great when we can get those types of amenities and make Downtown a place that's conducive with living and working," Moore said.
The plan is considered a beautification project for the city, Moore said, and will not be considered a city park.
Fundraising efforts for the project in the past year included a popular event called Balls Around the Block, organized by Sixth Street resident Craig Beachler in February. The event - a Downtown bar crawl attended by about 230 people - raised roughly $6,400.
Add that to $2,400 in individual donations and the council is roughly $16,200 from its goal. Donations can be made to the Downtown Dog Recreation Area Fund by contacting the Greater Cincinnati Foundation.
The $75,000 budget will pay to grade the site, put down crushed limestone (which is not toxic and limits odors) over much of the area, plant some trees and put up fences, including a solid screen fence blocking the view of the highway from the dog area, Wiedeman said.
"We hope it will be maintained by some committed users - I'll be one of them," Wiedeman said.
Among those excited about the dog area is Mic Foster. He owns the Pet Athletic Club, a kennel/dog day-care facility and training school just around the corner from the project on Reedy Street and said many of his customers have expressed the desire for something like this.
"Part of the reason people live Downtown is so they can walk as much as possible," Foster said. "It's sort of frustrating that you have to get in the car and drive somewhere just to exercise your pet."

Diamonds are a dogs best friend......

ROCKVILLE, Md. - A Rockville dog ate a diamond worth $20,000. In an instant, the three-plus carat rock vanished down the throat of the dog.

Diamonds may be a girl's best friend, but apparently dogs like them too -- or at least this guy does.
The owners of the Robert Bernard Jewelry Store say their hearts sank when they realized Soli the dog had consumed a pricey doggy treat -- a gem with a big price tag. ABC 7 Talkback:
"Twenty thousand dollars -- that is all I could think about," said Robert Rosin, one of the store's owners.
A diamond dealer brought the big rock to the store to show the owners, and just when he pulled it out, he dropped it.
"Saw Soli go for the diamond -- gobbled it up," recalled Rosin. "Tried to get it -- couldn't get it -- gone!"
They called the vet who advised letting the diamond follow nature's course.
"It was not that pleasant," said George Kaufmann, another owner of Robert Bernard Jewelers. "I followed him; I had to pick up his stuff; I had to go through the things. I can understand what it was like in the old Gold Rush. I felt like I had just hit pay dirt."
After three days of prospecting, the diamond appeared and the dealer got his diamond back. As for Soli, he's getting plenty of traditional doggy snacks to keep him from munching on anymore gems.
"It was a happy ending to say the least," Kaufmann said.
Even though Soli is a rescue dog, his value increased dramatically for three days. But even though he's no longer carrying around a big diamond, he's still priceless to his owners.

Cat Survives for a Month in Warehouse Freezer

Frosty the feline is lucky to be alive after being trapped in an industrial warehouse freezer in England where temperatures hovered at minus 24 degrees below zero. Brrr! "We think he'd been in the warehouse for at least four weeks," a warehouse employee tells the (U.K.) Daily Mail.
The black-and-white cat, thought to be about a year old, was "spotted on several occasions by staff but no-one could catch him," reports the Daily Mail. Frosty, as the warehouse employees named him, could have reasonably escaped through the main doors but the noise of the delivery trucks roaring up to the warehouse probably scared the cat away from the high traffic exit.
Finally, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) put out a humane live-capture trap for Frosty to entice him into the cage with cat treats and water. "It's incredible that Frosty survived for so long in such a harsh environment," RSPCA spokesman Steve Sellars told the Daily Mail. It is believed that the frisky feline survived by eating frozen peas and licking moisture off frozen food packets.
Frosty did not escape his icy adventure unscathed. He suffered frostbite to his ears and tail and had to have them amputated. But other than that, Frosty will be just fine. "He's a lovely cat and he's become very playful," RSCPA employee Rachel Allcock told the Daily Mail. "We're looking forward to his full recovery and getting him to his new home."
One of the warehouse workers has already volunteered to give Frosty a new, warm, place to live.

Theres's new addition to the Newport Aquarium

Lets give a warm welcome to the newst addition to the Newport Aquarium.

The King penguin chick at the Newport Aquarium .The Newport Aquarium says a baby King penguin has hatched.
The chick weighed just 205 grams when it was born on February 17th. It's doubled its weight in the first week of it's life. The gender of the chick won't be known for a few more weeks.
This King chick is a second-generation Newport Aquarium penguin. Its parents were both born at the Aquarium four years ago. The King chick will likely spend its time nestled under its penguin parents. As days pass, the chick will begin to slowly venture away from its nest and be more visible in the Kroger Kingdom of Penguins exhibit, like the Gentoo penguin chicks who were born there last month.
There are only 15 accredited institutions that hold King penguins in North America
